Start Low, Go Slow

The golden rule of edibles is "start low, go slow." Edibles take significantly longer to take effect than other methods, and the experience lasts much longer. Taking too much because you "didn't feel anything" after 30 minutes is the most common mistake.

Important

Wait at least 2 hours before considering a second dose. Many people make the mistake of re-dosing too early, leading to an unexpectedly intense experience.

Dose Ranges & Expected Effects

Individual responses vary significantly based on body weight, tolerance, metabolism, and whether you've eaten recently. These ranges are general guidelines, not guarantees.

Dose (mg)LevelTypical Effects
1 โ€“ 2.5 mgMicrodoseSubtle mood lift, mild focus enhancement, no impairment
2.5 โ€“ 5 mgLowLight relaxation, mild euphoria, slight sensory enhancement
5 โ€“ 15 mgModerateNoticeable relaxation, stronger euphoria, altered perception
15 โ€“ 30 mgStrongStrong effects, significant impairment, not for beginners
30 โ€“ 50 mgVery StrongIntense effects, high impairment, experienced users only
50 โ€“ 100 mgExpertVery intense, potential for adverse effects, medical patients
100+ mgExtremeOverwhelming for most โ€” risk of severe discomfort
First Time?

If you have never consumed edibles before, start with 2.5โ€“5 mg. You can always take more next time, but you cannot un-take a dose.

Why Edibles Hit Differently

When you consume an edible, the active compounds pass through your digestive system and are processed by the liver before entering the bloodstream. This is called "first-pass metabolism." The liver converts some compounds into different metabolites that can be significantly more potent than the original form.

This is why edibles feel qualitatively different โ€” not just stronger, but a different character of experience. The liver-processed metabolites cross the blood-brain barrier more effectively and bind to receptors differently than compounds absorbed through the lungs.

  • Absorption is slower and more variable (30 min to 2+ hours)
  • Liver metabolism produces more potent metabolites
  • Effects last much longer (4-8 hours vs. 1-3 hours)
  • Onset is harder to predict and depends on stomach contents
  • Full stomach delays onset but may increase total absorption

Onset, Peak & Duration Timeline

PhaseTypical TimingNotes
Onset30 min โ€“ 2 hoursFaster on empty stomach, slower after a meal
Peak effects2 โ€“ 4 hoursMaximum intensity, plan accordingly
Plateau4 โ€“ 6 hoursGradual decrease from peak
Wind down6 โ€“ 8 hoursEffects fading, may still feel mild effects
Residual8 โ€“ 12 hoursSubtle aftereffects, avoid driving
Plan Your Schedule

Block out at least 6-8 hours with no obligations when trying a new dose. Do not drive or operate machinery during this time.

What to Do If You Take Too Much

While extremely uncomfortable, consuming too much is not medically dangerous for otherwise healthy adults. No fatal overdose from edibles alone has ever been documented. However, the experience can be intensely unpleasant.

  1. 1Stay calm โ€” remind yourself that the feeling is temporary and will pass
  2. 2Move to a comfortable, familiar environment with dim lighting
  3. 3Stay hydrated โ€” sip water or a non-caffeinated beverage
  4. 4Eat something light if possible โ€” food can help moderate absorption
  5. 5Try chewing black peppercorns โ€” the terpene beta-caryophyllene may help reduce anxiety
  6. 6Distract yourself with familiar, comforting media (music, a favorite show)
  7. 7Do NOT consume caffeine or alcohol โ€” these can worsen anxiety
  8. 8If severe distress occurs, call a trusted friend or a health helpline

BatchCraft Warning Thresholds

The BatchCraft Calculator uses a three-tier warning system to flag potency levels that need attention:

LevelTriggerMeaning
Note (blue)Source material โ‰ฅ 30gLarge batch โ€” double-check your measurements
Warning (amber)โ‰ฅ 50 mg per portionStrong dose โ€” experienced users only
Danger (red)โ‰ฅ 100 mg per portionVery high โ€” risk of adverse effects

These thresholds are intentionally conservative. If you see a warning, consider increasing your portion count to bring the per-serving dose down to a comfortable level.

Special Considerations

  • Body weight affects dose response โ€” heavier individuals may need slightly more
  • Tolerance builds with regular use โ€” experienced users may need higher doses
  • Medications can interact โ€” consult a healthcare provider if taking prescriptions
  • Empty vs. full stomach significantly affects onset and intensity
  • Individual metabolism varies widely โ€” what works for a friend may not work for you
  • Altitude can amplify effects in some individuals

Responsible Sharing

Never Surprise Someone

Always clearly label edibles with the estimated dose per serving. Never give someone an edible without their full knowledge and informed consent. Keep all edibles secured away from children and pets.

  • Label every container with: recipe name, date made, estimated mg per portion
  • Store in child-resistant containers, clearly marked
  • Inform anyone consuming about the expected dose and onset time
  • Keep a written log of your recipes and strengths for reference
