Edible Dosage by Body Weight

Body weight is one factor in finding your ideal cannabis edible dose. The table below gives starting ranges by weight and experience level. Always start at the low end — you can always take more next time, but you cannot un-take an edible.

Note: These are general guidelines only. Tolerance, metabolism, and empty vs. full stomach affect your experience more than weight alone. Begin with 2.5–5 mg regardless of the table below if you are new to edibles.

FAQ

How many mg of THC should I take based on my weight?

A common starting guideline is 0.05 mg THC per pound (0.11 mg/kg) of body weight for beginners. For a 150 lb person that is about 7.5 mg. However, body weight is just one factor — tolerance, metabolism, and whether you've eaten recently all affect how you respond. Always start at 2.5–5 mg regardless of weight.

Does body weight affect how edibles hit you?

Yes, but less directly than with alcohol. Body weight influences how much total blood volume distributes THC, but metabolic rate, liver enzyme activity, and tolerance matter more. Heavier individuals may need slightly more to feel the same effect, but the difference is less predictable than for alcohol.

What is a standard edible dose in mg?

In legal markets, a standard single dose is 5–10 mg THC. Beginners should start with 2.5 mg, regular users typically use 10–25 mg, and experienced high-tolerance users may use 50 mg or more. CBD dosing starts at 10–25 mg with much less risk of overconsumption.
