AVB Edibles: The Complete Guide

Already vaped bud (AVB) is the most underused resource in any vaporizer owner's kit. It's decarbed, it's potent enough to use, and it costs nothing extra. This guide covers dosing, recipes, taste fixes, and the BatchCraft AVB calculator — so you waste nothing.

What is AVB?

AVB — also called ABV (already been vaped) — is cannabis that has been heated in a dry herb vaporizer. The vaping process converts THCA into active THC through decarboxylation, so AVB is ready to use in edibles without any extra prep. Depending on how thoroughly it was vaped, it retains between 0.5% and 9% THC.

The key advantage

Fresh flower needs decarboxylation before making edibles (usually 40–50 min at 250°F/120°C). AVB skips this step entirely. You can eat it directly, stir it into food, or infuse it into fat — all without any oven time.

AVB Dosing by Colour

Potency depends on how fully the material was vaped, which shows up as colour. Use this table as a starting point — individual vaporizer and strain variance means your specific batch could be ±30%.

AVB ColourFresh Equiv.Start DoseRegular Dose
Blonde (6–9% THC)~0.4g fresh0.5–1g1–2g
Light Brown (4–6%)~0.6g fresh0.75–1.5g1.5–3g
Medium Brown (2–4%)~1g fresh1–2g2–4g
Dark Brown (1–2%)~2g fresh2–3g3–6g
Dark/Black (0.3–1%)~4g fresh4–6g6–10g

Doses shown are per serving. Start at the low end of the range and wait 90 minutes before assessing. AVB edibles can be surprisingly potent.

Best AVB Edible Ideas

AVB Peanut Butter Cups

Easy

Stir finely ground AVB into warm peanut butter, pour into silicone cups, top with melted dark chocolate. No cooking required — the fat in PB increases absorption.

AVB Capsules

Easy

The cleanest option. Fill size-00 gel capsules with powdered AVB or AVB oil. Precise dosing, no taste, long shelf life. Ideal for medical users.

AVB Butter / Cannabutter

Medium

Simmer AVB in unsalted butter for 2–3 hours, strain through cheesecloth. Use the finished butter in any baked recipe. Longer infusion time than fresh flower needed.

Taste mask: Good·Method: Infusion

AVB Honey

Medium

Combine AVB with coconut oil and raw honey, warm at low heat for 2 hours. The honey sweetness fully masks earthy notes. Use in teas, on toast, in dressings.

Taste mask: Very Good·Method: Infusion

No-Bake Chocolate Balls

Easy

Mix AVB with cocoa powder, rolled oats, almond butter, maple syrup, and a pinch of salt. Roll into balls, refrigerate. Lasts 2 weeks in the fridge.

Taste mask: Very Good·Method: Direct

AVB Coconut Oil

Easy

Infuse into coconut oil for a versatile cooking base. MCT oil works even better for bioavailability. Use in stir-fries, smoothies, or to make suppositories for zero-taste dosing.

Water Curing: Fix the Taste

Water curing removes the harsh, earthy compounds responsible for AVB's strong taste — without significantly reducing cannabinoid content. It takes 24–48 hours but makes a noticeable difference in palatability.

1

Soak in cold water

Place AVB in a mason jar, fill with cold water. Stir well. Leave 8–12 hours.

2

Drain and rinse

Pour through a fine mesh strainer. Rinse with fresh water. The water will be dark brown — that's the bitter compounds leaving.

3

Repeat 3–5 times

Refill with fresh water, soak 4–6 hours, drain. Continue until water runs mostly clear (usually 3–5 cycles over 24–48 hours).

4

Dry thoroughly

Spread on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Air-dry 24 hours or oven-dry at 200°F (93°C) for 20 minutes.

5

Use immediately

Water-cured AVB loses its harsh taste but retains most cannabinoids. Use within a week or freeze.

Water curing loses minimal THC. Studies on water-soluble terpenoids show most cannabinoids are fat-soluble and remain in the plant material through water soaks.

Getting the Most from AVB

  • Infuse into fat, not waterTHC is fat-soluble. Infusing AVB into butter, coconut oil, or MCT oil extracts far more cannabinoids than eating it raw.
  • Grind finely before infusingMore surface area = better extraction. Use a coffee grinder if possible — a fine powder extracts 20–30% more than coarsely ground material.
  • Low and slow infusionKeep temperature under 200°F (93°C) during infusion. High heat can degrade THC. 160–180°F for 2–3 hours is the sweet spot.
  • Use lecithinAdding 1 tsp sunflower lecithin per cup of oil creates an emulsifier that helps fat-bound cannabinoids absorb more readily in the digestive tract.
  • Eat with a fatty mealEven if your recipe already uses oil, consuming AVB edibles with a meal that contains dietary fat increases bioavailability.
  • Save blondes separatelyLightly vaped (blonde) AVB is significantly more potent than dark brown. Store by colour to batch consistent doses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to decarb AVB before making edibles?

No. AVB is already decarboxylated by the heat from vaporizing. THCA has already converted to THC, so you can use AVB directly in recipes without a separate decarb step. This is one of its biggest advantages.

How much AVB should I use in edibles?

Because AVB has 1–7% THC depending on colour (vs 15–30% for fresh flower), you typically need 3–5× more by weight. Start with 1–2g per serving for medium brown AVB, or use our calculator to enter your exact AVB colour and get precise mg-per-portion estimates.

Does AVB taste bad in edibles?

AVB has a strong earthy, slightly bitter taste. Water curing beforehand removes most of the harsh flavour. Alternatively, combine it with strong-flavoured recipes (peanut butter, chocolate, honey) or encase it in capsules to avoid the taste altogether.

What are the best edibles to make with AVB?

The best AVB edibles are ones that mask its earthy taste: peanut butter cups, brownies, no-bake balls, and yoghurt. For zero-taste options, capsules are ideal. For cooking versatility, AVB butter or oil lets you infuse anything.

Can you eat AVB raw without cooking?

Yes — AVB is already decarbed so eating it raw (e.g., stirred into peanut butter) will produce effects. However, absorption is less efficient than infusing it into a fat first. For best bioavailability, infuse AVB into butter, oil, or MCT oil before consuming.
