How to Store Cannabis Edibles

Proper storage keeps your cannabis edibles fresh, prevents potency loss, and keeps them safe from accidental consumption. The enemies of edibles are heat, light, oxygen, and moisture — eliminate those and your edibles last months, not days.

Storage Best Practices

Airtight glass containers

Glass doesn't leach chemicals and creates a better seal than plastic. Mason jars are ideal.

Keep out of light

UV light degrades THC faster than almost anything else. Dark containers or dark storage spaces.

Refrigerate or freeze

Cold temperatures significantly slow degradation and mold growth. The fridge is the minimum for baked goods.

Label everything clearly

Date, mg per serving, total servings, and a clear cannabis warning. Non-negotiable for safety.

Separate storage

Store cannabis edibles in a dedicated container, separate from regular food — ideally locked.

Don't double-dip

When taking from the freezer, remove only what you'll use. Repeated thaw/freeze cycles degrade quality.

FAQ

How long do homemade cannabis edibles last?

Shelf life depends on the base food: cannabutter brownies last 1 week at room temp or 1 month refrigerated. Cannabis gummies last 1–2 weeks refrigerated. Cannabutter itself lasts 2–4 weeks refrigerated or 6 months frozen. Cannabis-infused coconut oil lasts 2 months at room temp or 6 months refrigerated. Always store in airtight containers away from heat and light.

Do edibles lose potency over time?

Yes, but slowly. THC degrades into CBN over time — a process accelerated by heat, light, and oxygen exposure. Properly stored edibles lose 5–10% potency per year. At room temperature in sunlight they can lose potency noticeably within months. For maximum potency retention: store in airtight glass containers, in the fridge or freezer, away from light.

Can you freeze cannabis edibles?

Yes — freezing is the best long-term storage method. Most cannabis edibles (brownies, cookies, gummies, infused butter and oil) freeze well for 3–6 months with minimal potency or quality loss. Wrap individual pieces before freezing so you can thaw one at a time. Avoid repeatedly thawing and refreezing.

How should I label homemade cannabis edibles?

Always label with: product name, date made, mg THC per serving, number of servings, and a clear warning that the item contains cannabis. Use a separate container from regular food. Keep out of reach of children and anyone who hasn't consented to consuming cannabis.
